My personal investigation will be themed on 'Identity &Culture'. How has your culture shaped your identity?
Every single person has their own unique identity and culture. An ‘identity’ is the image that one projects out into the rest if the world and ‘culture’ is the image which one has of themselves. Culture plays a huge role in shaping your identity. A person’s beliefs and morals are made up by culture and remain throughout your entire life. Many people identify culturally with a variety of subcultures, and cultural identity itself can change over time as the beliefs and behavior of individuals and groups change.Culture is what made you the person you are today and determines who or what you choose to associate yourself with. Your background and upbringing is what sets you apart from everyone else because no one has been raised the same. My identity would not exist if it wasn’t for my own culture and the values I have carried from it along the years.
I will be looking at our individual identity because it is unique. It combines our genetic being, our cultural, religious and linguistic background, our interests and abilities. It is affected by where and how we live, the country of origin of our parents and grandparents, and what we do with our lives. My aim for this personal investigation is to use the power of photography and bring all these key aspects that make up our identity and show it through an image. I will show that an image is worth a thousand words.
Some of the things that I have done consist of me photographing an image of an individual or a scene at a particular time or place, and I will use my control to create meaning to it. For example introducing aspects of a person's own culture, or views and values that will influence the finished piece. Those who view my work will also bring their own knowledge, experience and beliefs, and these will influence their perception of the images. The most crucial part of my personal investigation is to question stereotypes and conventions while exploring attributes such as gender, sexuality, race, nationality and heritage.
