Within Lorena Cosba’s work she reflects time through using old and new pictures of the same person (young without wrinkles and bigger eyes and a brighter face and then an overlapped image after ageing).
On the other image the idea behind it is that one person may have different traits that they may feel comfortable showing and others that they may not and this may be due the way society has made them feel and affected their identity. Showing the crazy and fun side verses the sad and depressed side. Lorena Cosbo uses colour and black and white to bring the message across however, I find it strange that she used colour for the old lady and black and white for the younger version because presumably, there would be enlightenment in the young representation and the black and white can act as a representation for the older generation as they would have less ‘spiritual’ life to be embracing.

Analysing the image very carefully, I can see that there are dramatic changes within the features on the face such as the straight lips contrasted with the frown from the older version of the image. The eyes have become smaller and can barely see anymore and the hair is unmaintainable and white. When the looking at the image, the feature that makes it stands out even more is the ripped effect of the paper crating a dramatic emphasis on to the image and the meaning behind it. The image shows us how the things that shape our identity such as our character and personalities change over time.

For my own response I used the same concept but decided to add more of a cultural element to it and how culture shapes our identity. I’ve taken a portrait of my model wearing a fashionable version of the burka that is considered as jewellery and underneath it is another portrait however, without any cultural elements added. The meaning behind my work is through tearing out some sections of the coloured image and revealing the black and white layer underneath, shows how plain an individual can be when not expressing any form of their cultural identity. To reinforce my idea, I made the cultural image vibrant with colours whereas the bottom image to be lifeless and that has worked in helping the overall image look effective. The white background adds emphasis to the main subject so that it is the main focus. However, for further experiments I will ensure that the images are inline with each other a bit more for the image to look more realistic.
